On March 3rd, 2011, twenty three community members graduated from the first City of McMinnville "CERT" class. These 23 citizens will be an additional resource in a major community disaster, starting first with helping in their own neighborhood and second by assisting emergency responders wherever needed. In order to become a Community Emergency Response Team or CERT member, each of these graduates participated in eight training sessions over the last few months that included specific rescue, wilderness survival, first aid, communication, and safety skills. The final training involved using many of these skills during an emergency rescue exercise. The CERT organization will work under the joint control of the McMinnville Fire and Police Departments and will be available to assist in local disasters (individually and as a team). They also may be asked to assist as an organized team at disasters occurring in regionally close jurisdictions.
