Kids on the Block After-School Enrichment offers a safe, fun environment that strives to promote academic and recreational development for 1st – 5th grade students. It serves more than 650 children each school day. The program combines two elements –- an hour of academic enrichment called “Power Hour” followed by two hours of recreation enrichment.

Kids on the Block is collaboratively sponsored by the City of McMinnville Parks & Recreation Department, McMinnville School District, and non-profit KOB Inc. Kids on the Block staff are hired by the Parks & Recreation Department to care for children and lead recreation enrichment activities such as arts & crafts, sports, and games. KOB also includes special events like Outdoor School and Science Week, as well as guest speakers and workshop presenters.

Positions:

•    Recreation Leader              Starting wage:  $8.40 / hour
•    Assistant Site Director        Starting wage:  $9.40 / hour
•    Site Director                      Starting wage: $10.40 / hour

Schedule & Location:

The program is offered Monday – Friday from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. However, employee work schedules can be adapted to fit class schedule or other commitments. The program is offered at all of district’s public elementary schools: Buel, Columbus, Grandhaven, Memorial, Newby, and Wascher. Job Descriptions:

Recreation Leader

  • Maintain a physically and emotionally safe atmosphere for children.
  • Actively facilitate recreation activities such as arts & crafts, sports, playground games, and indoor games.
  • Manage and guide students’ behavior by setting clear expectations, enforcing policies promptly, addressing issues fairly, and being an excellent role model at all times.
  • Help Site Director welcome parents and screen visitors, plan activities, and keep program areas organized and clean.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training workshops when scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned by Site Director and Program Manager.

Assistant Site Director

  • Current first aid & CPR certification required within 2 weeks of hire date.
  • Must be available to work Monday – Friday, 2:20 – 5:40 pm and occasional evening staff meetings.
  • High school diploma required; 2 years of college experience strongly preferred.
  • In addition to performing Recreation Leader responsibilities on a daily basis, perform Site Director’s responsibilities when necessary. (See both Recreation Leader and Site Director job descriptions for more info.)

Site Director

  • Current first aid & CPR certification required within 2 weeks of hire date.
  • Must be available to work Monday – Friday, 2:20 – 5:40 pm and occasional evening staff meetings.
  • College degree and/or commensurate experience in the fields of child development, recreation management, or education strongly preferred.
  • Maintain a safe, secure environment by monitoring attendance and check-out systems closely, screening visitors, enforcing policies, and monitoring facilities (including program areas, playground, bathrooms, hallways, and entrances).
  • Facilitate efficient, organized daily activities by creating an activity schedule, following routine procedures, gathering necessary supplies, and assigning staff to lead and supervise specific activities and program areas.
  • Support KOB staff in addressing minor behavior issues. Address serious behavior issues through logical consequences, behavior contracts, parent phone calls, and parent conferences.
  • Establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders: KOB staff, students, parents, Power Hour Coordinator, custodian, office staff, principal, and teachers.
  • Ensure that equipment and supplies are used efficiently and maintained in good order. Ensure that facilities are clean, organized, and exceed the custodians’ expectations.
  • Complete and submit paperwork thoroughly and promptly, including incident / accident reports, timecards, supply requests, staff evaluations, and activity schedules.
  • Attend regular Site Director and staff meetings and in-service training workshops when scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Manager.
