Police Chaplains

Police Chaplains are local pastors or ministers that volunteer to assist the officers of the police department and to provide assistance at critical events and for emergency notifications to families. They are trained to provide counseling and Critical Incident debriefing services (CISM) to first responders. They are also encouraged to ride along with and get to know the department staff.

The police department provides uniform style clothing that is distinctly different from a regular law enforcement uniform and there is no law enforcement authority provided with this position.

All department chaplains must pass a background investigation and serve at the direction and pleasure of the Chief of Police. Despite this direct responsibility to the Chief, their primary duties of counseling and supporting department staff are considered confidential communication by law and they are not free to disclose this information to the Chief or any other entity except under very specific circumstances.
